Seminar on American Popular Culture

A new course - a Seminar on American Popular Culture - will be offered during the 2010 May Term.  The class may be an interesting elective for you, and will especially be appealing for majors in communications, sociology, history, social sciences, social studies education, intercultural studies, international studies (ministry), and international studies (business).

Seminar on American Popular Culture - SS 337
May Session (May 10-28, 2010)
3 credit hours

One of the subjects within cultural geography receiving growing attention involves popular culture phenomena.  Found throughout the country, aspects of popular culture permeate our society in every aspect.  This course examines many of the regions within North America where aspects of popular phenomena are encountered.  Examples will include elements of material and non-material culture, from local to regional to national trends in cuisine, fashion, sports, media, film, music, architecture and more.

From the northwest sound of Pearl Jam to Woodstock; from geography to Rocky Mountain Oysters; from Hollywood to the national mass media; from fox-hunting to ice hockey and other sports; from the log-cabins of Applalachia to Art Deco in Miami, a distinct geographical emphasis is found in the material covered.

Remember this course as an optjion when you look into completing your course schedule over the next several weeks.  The course will include at least one field trip.  A tentative syllabus is available upon request.

For further information, please contact Professor Mika Roinila at 257-2658.
