2006/2007 Student Computer Network Setup

The Network

In addition to the large computer lab where students can work on homework or surf the internet, Bethel College has a campus-wide computer network connected in the residence halls. Sailor Residential Center has both Wireless 802.11b and Wired 10 base-T networking in the Acorn, Great Room and Manges-Tuckey residence rooms. Wireless Networking is installed in all other residence halls. Many common areas on campus also include wireless access such as Bowen Library, Dining Commons, Miller-Moore Academic Center, Sufficient Grounds and many outdoor areas. Notebook computers are recommended for their portability, but are not a necessity, as the lab is open until midnight except on Friday and Saturday.

Computer and Networking suggestions for Wireless and Wired purchases:

WIRED 10 BASE-T in Manges and Tuckey.

The following settings will be necessary on Wired 10 base-T NICs.

TCP/IP Protocol: DHCP, or "Obtain IP address automatically"

Computer Name: Your Student Username

NOTE: Other Registration information will be asked at time of first connection to the Network.

WIRELESS NETWORK in ALL Residence Halls on Campus is 802.11b, (802.11a is also supported in some locations.)

Since the 2004/05 school year, we support only “Wi-Fi CERTIFIED™” cards, or cards that Bethel College has certified. Our network infrastructure is provided by Cisco Systems. Cisco is the wireless network card brand of choice to ensure 100% compatibility with our network. We are offering SMC Networks wireless products as an alternative to Cisco Systems. The Bethel Bookstore sells a variety of computer supplies, including Cisco and SMC network cards as well as cables and software. We recommend that any new card purchased would support 802.11a, 802.11b and 802.11g. USB wireless network cards are discouraged.

Cisco Systems and SMC Networks are the only brands of wireless Network Interface Cards, (NICs), we guarantee to work on our network. We offer support for any “Wi-Fi CERTIFIED™” NICs. Any NICs that are not “Wi-Fi CERTIFIED™” may NOT be able to connect to the network, and thus are not supported.
