Bethel’s IT Department is proud to announce that the new dorm will have both wired and wireless internet access. This is for the convenience of the students living there. They will have the mobility of Wi-fi or the stability and higher speed of being hard-wired into the internet. With the advent of IP TV and other high bandwidth services students may choose to plug in to get the higher bandwidth and stability that wireless does not provide. Residents may choose to purchase a wireless card for their desktop if they would like more flexibility in positioning their computer. The network cables have not been pulled yet. However, we hope to begin pulling cable by the beginning of July. The cables being pulled will be category 6 Augmented (CAT 6A) cables. CAT 6A cable is a high grade of cable known for its stability and reliability at today’s high internet speeds. The cable is able to support the new standard of 10 Gigabit to the desktop.
A student wishing to use the wireless in the new dorm will need to comply with the standards already mentioned on our website. The network card must be wi-fi certified and support 802.11 a,b or g , computers must be up to date with all Operating System updates and Anti-virus updates. Windows XP and Vista are the supported operating systems. Mac’s will work but you are on your own for support.
