Summer Camps

June & July on Bethel's campus, we offer camps for kids ages 8-18.

Science Camps

CHEMISTRY CAPERS
Beth Kroa, Ph.D. Assistant Professor of Chemistry
July 8-12
9 a.m.-Noon
Ages 9-14
Cost: $110

Goggles and grime, let’s solve a crime! Have you ever wondered why fireworks display many colors when they ignite? Do you ask yourself why you have to sort the different kinds of plastics in recycling centers? Through hands-on learning, student teams will conduct experimental activities to understand the causes, effects, and variables involved in some of these questions, among others. These students will not only be having fun each day, but training to “fight crime.” The fifth and final day, the students will solve a “Whodunit” scenario by incorporating the information and techniques they used during the week to put the Pilot Prankster in his or her place.

SCIENCE SMACKDOWN
Beth Kroa, Ph.D. Assistant Professor of Chemistry
July 15-19
9 a.m.-Noon
Ages 9-14
Cost:  $110

Are you ready to rumble? Student teams will be assigned a daily task related to chemistry, physics, or engineering to be completed in two hours. Can your team build the bridge with the lightest mass that holds the heaviest load? Who will dominate the trebuchet launch? Which team will create the chemical volcano that spews the tallest eruption? Using an inquiry-based approach, students will unfold the underlying scientific principles governing their task with the guidance of faculty. These tasks are just ideas to whet your appetite. The REAL tasks will be revealed when you arrive each morning! Friday, a Science Smackdown Stage is planned for students to demonstrate their most impressive findings.
