Local Nursing Honor Society

There were 42 new members inducted into the local chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing March 26, in ceremonies held at Goshen College, Goshen, Ind. The Nu Omicron-At-Large Chapter is sponsored by the baccalaureate nursing schools of Bethel College, Mishawaka; Goshen College, Goshen; and St. Mary's College, Notre Dame.

Sigma Theta Tau International is an organization of nurse leaders, scholars and researchers, with offices in the Virginia Henderson International Nursing Library located in Indianapolis, Ind. The honor society, founded at Indiana University in 1922, has over 356 chapters at more than 400 colleges and universities in the United States of America, Canada, Taiwan, South Korea and Australia. Worldwide membership is more than 220,000.

Membership in the society is awarded to bachelor's, master's and doctoral nursing candidates who demonstrate high scholastic achievement and graduates of nursing programs who have made outstanding contributions to nursing. Sigma Theta Tau encourages and actively supports further professional development and promotes nursing scholarship, leadership, creativity and commitment to nursing among its members. The keynote speaker was Mervin Helmuth, associate professor of nursing at Goshen College and vice president of the Indiana State Board of Nursing. The meeting was conducted by President Brenda Srof from Goshen College.

Bethel College is an accredited Christian college of the arts and sciences offering associates, bachelor's and master's degrees in more than 50 areas of study. The current enrollment of 1,964 includes students from 34 states, 17 countries, more than 20 denominational affiliations and 16 percent from culturally diverse backgrounds. Scholarships are available based upon a variety of factors including academic achievement, talent in the arts or athletics, ethnicity and church affiliation. Bethel offers classes at four satellite locations, as well as its Elkhart campus. The main Bethel campus is situated on 75 wooded acres in Mishawaka, Ind.
